iPhone SE Review — 1 Month Later (Feat. Walt Mossberg)

– Okay. Normally this videowould be very different. I talk about how Apple announced the new iPhone SE a month ago this week. Talk about my experiencesusing it since then. Tell you how despitethrowing it in my pocket with keys and other telephones and it’s slipping off numerous faces with scaring regularity, it was still amazinglyscratch and be broken. About how I still miss high-pitched dynamic array on the uncommon motives Iwatch movies on my phone but primarily never noticed it’s LCD and not ultra high density. That I’ve been spoiledby the iPhone 11 pro and extremely the iPhone1 1 pro max battery life which gets me through a daylight and a half without violating a sweator broke out a charger while the new SE has mein battery saver state by dinnertime, pretty much every evening. How the photos in video arealmost as good as the iPhone 11. It time doesn’t have as muchrange, especially as you get into the very low illuminated and light mode or dynamic stray on high frame rate video. And how I do miss the full screen showing, gesture, piloting, and face ID of the more recentiPhones cause I adoration that, but I too realize why so many parties still love the residence button and touch ID especially in the age of concealments. And now that I’m not wearinggloves, when I go outside or you know, go outside, Ican appreciate it more.Normally this video wouldbe that, but something else happened when the brand-new iPhone SE came out, something wonderful andalso blaze disappointing. See, for years there havebeen some in their local communities who recollect mainstreamproducts exclusively to complain that they’re not also for pros that actively get upset when every make isn’t specifically for them, even if it may be perfect for their parents or kidsor significant others. But with the iPhone, SEthere was an empathy miracle most reviewers whothemselves are gravitate towards a $1,200 iPhone pro max said that – I’m evoked about it though I reflect for $399, it’s a really good deal.- I review for mostpeople , not the tech geeks like you and me really gettingaccess to the Apple ecosystem for $400 is more importantthan any of those things. – At 399, it was going to be a great phone for countless parties, who’dresisted the bigger bulkier very expensive brand-new iPhone. – Apple, basically merely delivered one of the best value phonesof its first year and in a long time – It’s just an iPhoneSE it’s really not intend for devotees, but I’m drawn to it.I gotta be honest, I really like it. – You know the iPhone SEisn’t just a good deal, it’s a really good phone. – For $ 400 four to fiveyears for procreating assured that your phone is prettymuch in the building and future-proof it up to snuff. You is certainly considering upgrade. – Can you trust the iPhone SE? Yes – If you’re looking for a fastphone to create some material, bide connected withyour friends and family and do whatever else it is that you’re going tobe doing on your phone, this is the phone for you. – The iPhone SE isn’t justthe iPhone for your grandma, it’s really the iPhonefor almost everyone. – Most, but not all because yeah “hes still” some pushback some established reviewerswho showed or outright stated that the iPhone SE wasn’t a serious phone. And so by paying it a positive revaluation, by recommending it for other parties when we ourselves would, “never be caught dead apply it.” We were somehow being disingenuous grading on a bow, lying, which as cringy sad as that affection may be, it punches me on so many levels.See, I’m a nerd, a geek, a tech leader and I frequently buy thehighest intent gadgets possible and instantly lose myself in every little implementation detail. And for many years, that’s whatand how I reviewed as well. But I’ve been working very hard, certainly conscientiouslyover the last couple of years to perfectly change my approach because the vast majority of people who buy this stuffjust aren’t tech tops. They aren’t people who geta dozen brand-new telephones to look at every year and never carry anythinglonger than a few weeks. There are people who work highly, very hard for their coin and have tostretch it as much as possible who keep their phones twoto five years, who hand them down to other family memberswho don’t shop based on specs but on value. They’re my family, and if they’re not you, they’re probably their own families more, your parents, your teenagers, your significant others. And for the most part they’ve been completelyunderserved by today’s tech media.I want, can you even imagine if this was cars we were talking about. Because yes. All cover YES. That’s very literally theadvice any petrol foreman, any gear head worth theirhumanity poster should be giving everyone else in theirfamilies and in this world. Even and specially ifthey’ve been reviewing windows since they still had to launch it from the DOS prompt or they flip-flop laptops like Shake Shack doespatties when they still had a lunch hour rush. And it didn’t use to be like this. In fact Walt Mossberg pioneered the personal technology column at the wall street journal, merely precise. so itwouldn’t be like this. That’s why when Walt joinedme on my new podcast the coming week I took the opportunityto ask him all about it.The full audio form is upin your favorite podcast app or if you have Nebula or theearly access tier of my Patreon and yeah, I’ve got Patreon. I’m Indy now, remember. You can pate right on over and watch the entire 40 minuteplus conference right now. Links to everything inthe description below. Meanwhile, longest intro ever. I am Rene Ritchie and this isthe iPhone SE 1 month last-minute. Not really, but kinda – I think that particularlywhen reviewing consumer products tech reviewers and you’re a good one and there are a number of other good ones have got to wake up in the morning, said, okay, I’m going toapproach this, the testing and the reviewing and the writing as is if I were a normal being , not a stupid person not a technophobe, butsomebody who couldn’t care less how many cores there arein the in the processor? What the GPU is? How numerous milli ampsthey are on the battery? They do care how many hoursyou can get out of battery. And I had a particularly elaborate artillery assessment for one for phones and one for laptops and one for tablets thatI did in prepared myself because I mulled theso-called standard measures were controlled by the industry. And I think there’s too little … I think that some of thereviewers have strayed from that. The iPhone SE is a perfect lesson. This morning, I get upand I dictated a red one for my bride and will exclusively use an iPhone SE but whose old-fashioned one is basically dying. And so I immediately sought her this one. she’s actually not so crazy about the 4.7 inch screen she’d rather it wasmore, but she’ll take it. And so I required one and she’s not going to careat all about the camera. The truth is the camera is lane better than what she’s beenused to on her older SE it’s an enormousimprovement, both optically And as you know, in terms ofthe computational photography. She’ll be able to do description procedure, which of course shecouldn’t do on her old-time SE. She doesn’t care that she doesn’t even knowwhat ultra wide angle is. And by the way, my bride is maybe two X, three X smarter than mein general on everything. But her outlook toward tech is, and she’s not afraid of it.She utilizations tech the working day long. She employs her telephone. She squanders her Mac. I’m talking about 80, 90% of people. Apparently it’s not like1 991 when there were a lot of people who had nevertouched a computer. It’s much differently constituted beings have much moreexperience, but I envision 90%, 80% if you really want to be generous, 75% of the people still don’t care about these kinds of detailsthat maybe you or I might. So, yes, I was well awarebecause I predict the reviews, I speak the spec sheet.I even talked to beings at Apple, even though I’m retiredthey still talk to me. So I understood it. It’s not unlike what Googledid with one of the pixels which is stay with one camera use the software to give itadditional magnitude in peculiarities. – It’s funny because my motherwas a university lecturer. My father was an IBM engineer. My sister is a doctor andall of them are interested in this phone because all ofthem like the dwelling button.Like the classic dwelling button iPhone, it fits the mental model, they just want that phone but better and they’re allthree times smarter than I am. And none of them asked me about that. They want to know ifit takes good photos like all the basic thingsthat you just mentioned. – Exactly. And when youtalk about the home button my partner has occasionallytried to use my 11 pro. – Rene Ritchie Yeah. And before that I had a 10 and you know the gesture system is different even somebody like you and I, it takes a day or two to getreally comfortable with it.She has no patience for that. She says to me, “Where’s the button, why is this … How do Iswitch to the next app? ” And I said, “Well, there’s a little line and you swipe it or you move, you can swipe it up andyou’ll see everything.” She says, “I simply want the button, – Rene Ritchie Yeah. this is ridiculous, I don’t want this thing, and also it’s too big. So, and as you know the 11 pro is the smaller one of the three Eleven’s.So, cause I’m not a big phone guy myself, but so that’s her point of view, she wants to get on with it. And I think it’s soimportant for reviewers if they consider thispart of their gathering to adjust, it’s hard but you just got to transformyourself a little. And by the way the worst thing would be to likewise talk down to those people. Yes Because like you say, they’re three times smarter than you in many cases, or at least very competent about things you don’tknow the first thing about.- Yeah. – So you don’t talk down to them, you precisely give it to them straight-from-the-shoulder. If it’s bad, tell himit’s bad, don’t buy it. And here’s why, or if it’sgreat, you tell them it’s great. Feel very confident about buying it. Or as you know, veryoften it’s in the middle. And you say, if you’re this kind of person and you care a lot about I don’t know the screen, this’ll be okay for you.Or if you care a lot about the screen this won’t be okay foryou, whatever it is. But that’s the kind ofway you approach it. – As for me, I feel thesame as I did a month ago. Maybe even more for peoplewho want or need a great value for their telephone dollar, peculiarly right now the iPhone SE is justthe best value in phones. And sacrificed its headroom andthe updates Apple will provide for four or five more times. I don’t think anythingelse even come close , not now and certainly nowhere nearly for that extent of time to come. Now, if you want to watchthe rest of my podcast with Walt where we talk about reviewing the MacBookpro versus MacBook Air, privacy in the age of shelter in place. And Oh yeah.
